Why Inclusive and Anti-Perfectionist Wellness?
Hello, world!
Do you ever read wellness blogs, view IG posts, or watch Tik Toks about becoming “#thatgirl” or getting your #glowup” and think….
How much money does this person think I have? Did they consider the chance that I may be recovering from an eating disorder?
Well, I definitely have. And that’s why I’m here writing to you.
The Move Towards Holistic Wellness
The wellness industry has the potential to be majorly beneficial to society. We are living in such a pivotal moment filled with so much change…
Hey, we’re spending more time in nature, leaving toxic relationships and jobs, and maybe even growing our own foods! But at the same time, the booming wellness world also has the potential to do plenty of harm.
Let’s go deeper into the “trends” and strive to actually create inclusive and genuine practices. There is SO much scientific and medical knowledge dating centuries before our current “conventional” medical system was developed.
So, let’s dig into all the tools and resources available, but with respect rather than dilution of traditions. Intention matters, but impact matters more.
If, for example, the intention behind making a TikTok about the benefits of Ashwagandha is to help others reduce stress, that’s great…But, if the information is delivered in a surface-level way, you risk 1) doing physical harm and 2) belittling the traditions and Ayurvedic origin of this herb (**not to mention, ignoring the people who created this medical system and live according to it everyday!**).
Anti-Perfectionism and Balance
I hope you find this platform to be a space for wellness ideas and information delivered in a non-judgy, non-culty kind of way…. know what I mean?
If you don’t, just go watch Nine Perfect Strangers, White Lotus, Bad Vegan… you get the gist!
A major pillar of Imperfectly Well is the anti-perfectionist attitude towards wellness. “All or nothing” thinking can be observed in diet culture, in gym culture, and in beauty standards. True wellness honors and respects balance, diversity, and all things being human. Life is meant to be lived, not measured and constantly monitored.
Self improvement does involve setting goals and finding tools to achieve them, but without joy in your life – will you even reap the rewards of meeting those goals?
Balance is a cornerstone to health, and it is found all across nature and various aspects of our lives. Effort and Ease. Day and Night. Yin and Yang. Moon and Sun…. Green juice and Ice Cream!
So, let’s dive into deeper well-being together. Let’s stay balanced, kind to ourselves, and kind to others. Let’s tune into the history of these holistic modalities that we love so much. Let’s allow ourselves to be imperfect!
Wishing you well,
Jess
